What the levels mean
- Alert level: the Department's first threshold at that gauge: the river is high.
- Minor flood level: the river is at the level the Department marks as a minor flood there.
- Major flood level: the river is at the level the Department marks as a major flood there.
Each gauge has its own thresholds, in its own unit (metres, or feet at Nagalagam Street). A level is a reading at one point on the river, not a forecast for the land around it.
River levels are the Irrigation Department’s own readings at its gauge, against its own thresholds. This is not a flood warning: flood warnings come from the Irrigation Department and DMC.
